Our Italy adventure began in Zurich. Tammy, Joshua and Julia were to arrive at 9:25 AM on Friday morning and Kevin at 10:20. However, because Tammy et al., were flying through JFK they were late (something about a guy deciding to get off, so they had to retrieve his bags, a broken hydraulic line, and 17 other planes ahead of them for take-off!; we hate JFK (the airport)!). So, by the time they reached Zurich, Kevin had already arrived, changed money, picked up the car, filled it with diesel, and we were ready to go.

Here you see our trusty (so far!) Renault:

Six hours later we had successfully negotiated the Alps, eaten at a picturesque alpine lake, figured out two styles of Italian tollbooths, and found our hotel. A day later, after about eight hours of driving on Italian expressways and through several cities, we arrived in Rome.

Unfortunately, we can't show pictures of those first two days, because Kevin managed to delete all the pictures in the digital camera before transferring them to the computer! So, although we really were at the following place and it really was cool, all you get is this digital picture of a postcard:
