Longmen Grottoes

While I was at the conference on Monday Tammy went with some folks to the Longmen Grottoes, where there are a large number (100,000) Buddhist art artifacts carved in the rocks.

Along the way, a bridge (the Chinese were the first to build arch-supported bridges (they also circumnavigated the world 700 years before the Europeans did!)):

Two companions. The lady on the left is from St. Louis. The girl on the right is the conference organizer’s daughter. She grew up in Edmonton until three years ago and now lives in Hong Kong.

Recognize one of these guys (below)? Hint: go back to the Shaolin Temple page.

The following Thursday there was an officially-organized tour of the Longmen Grottoes for the conference attendees. A few more pics:

Kevin loves to takes pictures of things like a monk on a big-screen TV at an ancient site. Always an interesting juxtaposition.

He also likes signs that translate Chinese into funny English, like the “Complaining Telephone” sign below.

With us below is our friend YangQuan Chen. He and his wife bought our house in Logan.
