Shaolin Temple

On Saturday we flew to Louyang and then went to see the Shaolin Temple (like in the old TV series Kung Fu with David Carradine).

We saw a performance by some of the students. In the immediate area around the temple there are 40,000 students, mostly grade school and middle school age. The tour guide said their goal was not too lofty – they all want to be Hollywood film stars like Jet Li!

The actual “temple” was a number of buildings where various meditations could be done and prayers offered and other buildings where monks would live.

It’s said to be good luck to walk on the lotus leafs as you approach the temple.

“Hmm” and “Haa” are two figures that appear in lots of Bhuddist temples as guards. Can you guess which is which? Hint: Their names are based on the sounds made by Gung-fu fighters (Gung-fu is the original spelling – Kung-fu is not really correct).

That’s some big incense! Kevin was not pleased! But apparently the smell attracts the Bhudda’s attention.

Next we came to the Pagoda Forest. There are 240 pagoda’s (used to be more), dating from 700 AD, containing the ashes of expired monks.
